Photo Essay: A Problem Without Borders

Street News Service 17 October 2019

Hong Kong has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Despite the boom, 20 per cent of its people live in poverty, with many ending up homeless. Across the globe, in Venice, Italy, homelessness and poverty are real threats to the Roma population. Photographer Stefano Leonardi documented both in his series ‘A Problem Without Borders’. (152 Words) - By Staff writer

Leonardi on Hong Kong:

"One in five people in Hong Kong now live in poverty. Many people are sleeping rough as they cannot afford the high rents. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world for its size. Due to the high cost of living, some low income families have to send elderly and disabled relatives on to the streets to beg, to help supplement their marginal incomes."

Leonardi on Venice:

"The Roma are a nomadic group of people, thought to number around 10 million across Europe. They have been persecuted throughout history. Many Roma live in informal settlements and have little access to education and healthcare, due to a lack of documentation and exclusionary government policies. The Roma in France and Italy have recently been the target of forced evictions from their settlements and deportation to Eastern Europe, where they face more destitution and discrimination."
