Film to focus on near-extinct Argentinian Afrikaners

The Big Issue South Africa 04 November 2019

A new documentary plans to track the growth of Afrikaans as a language in South Africa and beyond. Filmmaker Richard Finn Gregory has found a century-old community of “almost extinct” Afrikaners living in Argentina who still speak archaic Afrikaans, and he plans to film them to show how the language has evolved over time. While the majority of Afrikaners who moved to Argentina in the early twentieth century either moved back home or assimilated with Argentinians, this handful of people in a remote outpost continued to pass their language down through the generations. (314 Words) - By Kirsten Armour
