James Garner – beaten, abused and thrust to greatness

James Garner was an American actor who shot to fame after starring in the 1970s television series The Rockford Files. He also appeared alongside Steve McQueen in The Great Escape, and was later introduced to a younger audience through the family sitcom 8 Simple Rules. Garner was also a war hero and during the Korean War was awarded two purple hearts. He died in July and Christine Smith of Ireland’s Big Issue charts the exhausting career of the actor who was beloved as the least pretentious star in Hollywood. (1192 Words) - By Christine Smith
