Time of the month, time for change

Periods may still be one of the great taboos but it's an issue being embraced by a younger generation demanding change. Campaigners in the UK are fighting to have tax on sanitary products lifted, and to make sanitary products free for homeless women. International organisations like SHE and WaterAid help women set up micro-businesses and distribution networks to make and sell affordable pads in countries where periods are a cultural taboos and access to appropriate menstrual sanitation products is limited. But the fact remains, it is not an easy subject to bring into the spotlight. The Big Issue’s Vicky Carroll says the time has come to stop blushing and take action for the women who need change.
