When it was announced that a crucial affordable housing complex in downtown Nashville, Tennessee was would be turned into a period hotel under new ownership, its occupants had to rush to secure Section 8 vouchers —a federal rent subsidy for low-income individuals—and a find a new home. But places that accept the vouchers have a long waiting list, and that’s one thing residents don’t have: time. Their struggle illustrates how a growing city displaces its most vulnerable residents and perpetuates cyclical poverty and risk for homelessness. (1139 Words) - By Amanda Haggard
